Warri-Based Legal luminary, Chief Ariyo, Proposes Grassroots Solution to Nigeria’s electricity Crisis

A Warri-based lawyer and legal luminary/social development consultant, Chief Robinson Ariyo, has unveiled a community-driven strategy aimed at tackling Nigeria’s persistent electricity challenges from the grassroots level upward.

Ariyo’s proposal, which he describes as “a simple resolution to our power problem,” focuses on decentralizing electricity generation and distribution by organizing streets into manageable power units.

According to him, each unit would be equipped with solar panels and supported by lithium battery storage systems for consistent and renewable energy supply.

Speaking on the concept, Ariyo emphasised that the approach shifts attention away from heavy dependence on large-scale national grid projects.

Instead, it encourages localized, sustainable solutions that can be implemented at the street and community levels before being expanded to wider regions.
“It is possible to group streets into units for the purpose of power distribution,” he explained. “Each unit can be equipped with manageable solar panels and suitable lithium battery storage systems.”

He argued that such a model could significantly reduce the billions of naira typically spent on conventional electricity infrastructure, including transformers and centralized power projects, while also promoting environmentally friendly energy alternatives.

Energy experts have long pointed to decentralized renewable systems as a viable complement to Nigeria’s struggling national grid, particularly in underserved urban and rural communities. Ariyo’s proposal aligns with growing calls for innovative, bottom-up approaches to energy access.

If adopted, the initiative could empower communities to take greater control of their energy needs, improve reliability, and reduce long-term costs associated with power generation and distribution.

As Nigeria continues to grapple with erratic power supply, proposals like that of Chief Ariyo may contribute to shaping future discussions on sustainable and inclusive energy solutions.
