All African Games: Local talents are the recipe for Nigeria, Sports Minister’s Aide, Daniel declares

By: Aboluwade God’s Treasure (AGT)

It was another exciting super interview edition on the leading WhatsApp groups in Nigeria,*Sports World* as media Aide to the Minister of Sports (Senator Owan Enoh), Mr Kola Daniel occupied the hot seat to give his take on the level of preparedness of Nigerian athletes ahead of the 13th African Games.

Also, the globetrotter and well recognized award winning journalist was quizzed on the inclusion of Local based players from the NPFL into the National team(Super Eagles) for major competitions and he gave his thoughts.

He advocated vehemently for the local based players to be included in Nigeria’s team selections for the nation’s success, while sighting past examples and here were his words:

“Some of the players who have actually done this country proud and done so well for this country are products of the local league. Sunday Mba,who scored in the final, Azubuike Ogechukwu,Chigozie Agbin, Gabriel and co were products of the league.

“I have never undermined the power of the local league and I have never said that a player cannot be given the chance as local talents”.

He also added “There are many players who can play in the Super Eagles(our senior team) that are based in the local leagues, all they need it time and the opportunity,as well as the sense of belonging”

The well read media aide and journalist continued, “We have done it before,if you go back to the 1980 Nations cup we won, bulk of these players were on the home soil, Khadri Ikhana, Segun Odegbami, Best Ogedegbe, Okala, Christian Chukwudi…they were home based players and we won the nation’s cup.

“Look at Algiers ’90,we only lost in the finals and most of them were home based players.

“Yes, I believe in local based players and I feel that many of them can actually do it, if given the chance”. He concluded.

Ijeh Shoots Abia Warriors To Victory In Kano

Ijeh Shoots Abia Warriors To Victory In Kano

Star midfielder, Daniel Ijeh was the hero for Abia Warriors Football Club of Umuahia as his wonder strike at the Sani Abacha Stadium condemned title chasing Kano Pillars to their first NPFL home defeat of the ongoing season.

It was Abia Warriors first away victory of the season.

Coach Bethel Oji made four changes to the starting eleven against Kwara United FC in Aba last Thursday with Jerry Ogu, Emmanuel Onu, Sunday Megwo and Obi Samson surrendering their positions to Aliyu Mohammed Goyi, Ifeanyi Anaemena, Chinemerem Okike and Fabian Omaka.

The game lived up to expectation as it was entertaining, intriguing, captivating, and breathtaking. The first half saw both sides cancelling out each other with chances far and between.

In the second period, buoyed by the mammoth crowd, Kano Pillars came all out in search of goals, but they met a well drilled Abia Warriors defence. The introduction of Adamu Ibrahim in the second half saw the home side increase the tempo, but whatever they threw at the visitors the defence line stood stoutly, and the Warriors relied on counter attack with Daniel Ijeh as the orchestrator.

That game plan would have paid off for Abia Warriors in the 58th minute when Godwin Udoh met Daniel Ijeh’s telegraphic pass inside Kano Pillars’ box totally unmarked, but his hasty shot went sky high, when all he needed to do was to control the ball and calmly pick his spot.

As the game progressed Abia Warriors gaffer, Coach Bethel Oji replaced Fabian Omaka and Godwin Udoh with Onu Emmanuel and Antoine Desouza, with the latter becoming an instant nuisance for the Pillars’ defence. More importantly for the visitors, Daniel Ijeh had more freedom to defend and initiate Abia Warriors’ counter-attacks.

In the 78th minute, the unexpected happened to the home side.

Daniel Ijeh, who won Man-of-the -Match gong, sent a diagonal pass to Meme Okike, and as the winger gave chase, Pillars’ defender who was a yard ahead of him tipped the ball to the goalkeeper but unfortunately for them, the ball went out of play for a corner kick to Abia Warriors.

The resultant corner was headed out and Daniel Ijeh who was well positioned from 23 yards took a one-time shot that sailed into the roof of the net. It was a beauty of a goal that silenced the mammoth crowd.

Stunned by that goal, Kano Pillars came all out in search of the equalizer, and their experienced captain, Rabiu Ali even hit the bar but Abia Warriors held on to secure their second consecutive victory after that heartwarming 1-0 win over Kwara United at the Enyimba International Stadium last week.

Up next for Abia Warriors is a home tie against league leaders, Lobi Stars of Makurdi.

The member representing Oshimili North in the state House of Assembly, and sponsor of the programme, Hon. Frank Esenwa, said upon hearing of the Indigent Enrollee Adoption Initiative, he decided to utilize the opportunity to reduce the health stress of his constituents, especially at a time where drugs were becoming more expensive, and the global economy was dwindling.

Hon. Esenwa recognized the role of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa in bringing health insurance into the state, describing it as laudable, while also calling on others to embrace the programme.

Some of the beneficiaries who spoke including a 67 year old physically challenged retiree who has been battling health challenges, thanked Hon. Esenwa for the gesture saying that they had never it so good.

Highpoint of the event was the conferment of Health Insurance Ambassador on Hon. Esenwa by the Commission.

Tompolo’s firm in collabo with NSCDC over powers crude oil thieves in Ondo, set ablaze kegs containing crude

Tompolo’s firm in collabo with NSCDC over powers crude oil thieves in Ondo, set ablaze kegs containing crude

Operatives of the Tantita Security Services Nigeria Ltd (TSSNL), Ondo State chapter, in collaboration with the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), on Sunday morning, engaged a cartel of crude oil thieves in a shootout at an illegal crude oil camp in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo.

The combined team of TSSNL and NSCDC, after overpowering the criminal suspects in their camp along Alowe sea shore in Ilaje Local Government Area, destroyed 700 kegs containing 21,000 litres of crude oil stored in a large reservoir.

This was disclosed by the Executive Director, Operations and Technical Services of TSSNL, Captain Warredi Enisuoh, in a statement made available to journalists on Monday morning.

He said the joint security team, which uncovered the economic sabotage at about 8:36a.m on Sunday around the western corridor after a tip-off, was led by the TSSNL commandant in Ondo State, Chief Idowu Asonja.

According to him,the voluminous crude oil, which was adulterated, stored in a large, locally-built reservoir, and being sold to local buyers by the saboteurs, was suspected to be siphoned from the Trans-Escravos pipeline.

He said that the suspects operating the illegal crude oil storage camp, seeing the game was over, fled the scene in their speed boats during the gun battle with NSCDC operatives.

“It’s indeed a successful, but stressful trip. Our agents in Awoye area hinted to us about the perpetuation of the evil act carried out in that area.

It was a well fortified camp which the perpetrators believed was impenetrable for security agents, but we shocked them,” Captain Enisuoh quoted the leader of the team, Chief Asonja, as saying.

Captain Enisuoh further disclosed that all the 700 kegs containing 21,000 litres of adulterated crude oil, two wooden boats laden with crude oil as well as the entire illegal camp were set ablaze to serve as a deterrent to others.

Meanwhile, Captain Enisuoh quoted Chief Asonja as admonishing community dwellers in the Niger Delta, especially the Ilaje area, to desist from crude oil theft, pipeline vandalism, and its variants, urging them to support the war against economic sabotage being led by TSSNL so that the country can bounce back economically and nation will be great again.

NPFL: Insurance Surrender To Plateau Utd 2-0 In …..

Bendel Insurance Football Club of Benin, Sunday suffered a 2-0 defeat in the hands of former league champions Plateau United in the Nigeria Premier Football League.

The Benin Arsenals, with the 2-0 loss at the New Jos International Stadium, have suffered a back to back defeat following a 1-0 loss to Shooting Stars in Ibadan on Thursday last week.

Plateau United got the breakthrough goal courtesy of Alexander Enejo’s classy strike in the 51st minute of the game. Barnabas Daniel doubled the lead for the hosts in the 67th minute of play following a defensive blunder.

The first half had ended in a goalless situation with good scoring chances created and also squandered by both sides.

Insurance coach Monday Odigie in his search for goals and improved performance made a tactical switch in the 60th minutes of play, substituting Osaghae Junior, Sarki Ismael, Kelly Oahimijie for Michael Enaruna, Divine Nwachukwu Wisdom Stephens. The changes, indeed raised the standard of play as Divine Nwanchukwu and former Bayelsa Utd midfielder Wisdom brought life to the midfield but their efforts were not enough to subdue their hosts.

Substitute Michael Enaruna also gave a good account of himself as his 76th minute strike almost decimated Plateau Utd lead as his shot hit the bar without goalkeeper Suraj Ayeleso’s response. Evans Ogbonda’s fine freekick afterwards was another opportunity for Insurance to get a goal but goalkeeper Suraj dived at full length to push the ball off the goal line.

Recall that Bendel Insurance defeated Plateau Utd 1-0 in their first round meeting in Benin. Benjamin Tanimu scored the only goal of that match in the 15th of play to give Insurance the maximum points at home.

The Benin Arsenals will be looking to bounce back against Gombe Utd in Benin in the match day 24 on Friday, March 8 in a revised fixture. Their first meeting in Gombe ended 1-0 against Insurance. #

” Nigeria is the only country I have, so we must all join hands to protect and move Nigeria forward.

“Our economy is not in good stead . We must all rise up to occasion to revive it. We cannot fold our hands and allow a few persons to sabotage the nation’s economy for personal gains.

He appreciated the leadership of NUJ for recognizing his modest contributions to economic development just as he promised not to rest on his oars .

Presenting the award on behalf of the union, Isiguzor said the national executive after due consultations arrived at conferring the meritorious award on Tompolo for his contributions towards security , success in talking economic sabotage head long and economic recovery.

He said Tompolo has set the pace in securing Nigeria’s oil and gas facilities from the throes of economic insecurity in the Niger Delta region.

Isiguzor therefore urged the media, security agencies and Nigerians alike to cooperate with Tompolo in the task of eradicating oil thieves forthwith.

The NUJ boss stated: “Somebody has risen to the occasion and gathered an array of young men who have taken it upon themselves to help this country continue to survive as a peaceful nation, united and continue to fend for its people.

“And that is the man that has, to a very large extent, substantially, helped us address the issue of crude oil theft.

“That is one thing that has occupied our national life over time. By his commitment, dedication and diligence, Nigeria, as a country, has to a very large extent, reduced the activities of men of the underworld who have consistently engaged in pilfering, taking our common patrimony for their personal gains.

“The NUJ, having assessed the activities of TSSNL, has decided that we must accord the necessary recognition to the man who carries the flag, birthed this security organization, who has exceptionally distinguished himself.

“The NUJ has come to the Oporoza Community in Gbaramatu Kingdom to honour a distinguished son of the Niger Delta; a general in his own right who has distinguished himself, ensures and maintains an appreciable level of internal security.

“We have come to confer on him, the Internal Security Meritorious Award of the Nigeria Union of Journalists.

“In the course of the national security conference, held in Abuja, only one award had been approved and it is conferred on Dr Government Ekpemupolo”.

Isiguzo added : “I’m also excited that I’m doing this after 61 years of the existence of the NUJ, this award is coming up at this time.

“It is not just an honour to Tompolo but also an honour to me too. It is an honour to all of us and what that means is that the issue of insecurity is not just the responsibility of government but of every Nigerian.

“When you provide information, and intelligence to security operatives and agencies, you have contributed in some measures to reducing the problem of insecurity in the land.

“So, it is a collective responsibility, and all hands must be on deck to ensure we address our problems.

“If Nigeria is peaceful, every part of the country, including your household, will be peaceful and that will give birth to development and progress.

He enjoined his colleagues; Journalists to keep contributing their quota by sharing Intelligence with security agencies and operatives in order to engender peace, harmony and progress in the country.

Dignitaries at the ceremony included National Secretary of NUJ Shuaibu Leman and Delta state NUJ chairman, Churchill Oyowe who led members of the executive .
