Keyamo’s Soaring Success Casts a Shadow on Omo-Agege’s leadership

Keyamo’s Soaring Success Casts a Shadow on Omo-Agege’s leadership

In a remarkable twist of fate, one individual finds himself ascending to new heights, while another experiences a significant decline. The established order has been overturned, capturing the attention of all who bear witness to this extraordinary transformation. Time marches on, and even the most powerful has crumbled like a house of cards.

Festus Egwarewa Keyamo (SAN), the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development of Nigeria, currently finds himself riding high on the winds of success. But the same cannot be said for former Deputy Senate President and governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ovie Omo-Agege.

Once a prominent figure as Deputy Senate President, Senator Omo-Agege commanded respect and attention. His authority was unquestionable. He held sway over the Delta State APC, wielding his influence with confidence.

However, those days now seem like a distant memory. The tides have turned, and Omo-Agege has been pushed aside, relegated to the periphery. The Aviation Minister has stolen the limelight from the once-dominant figure, leaving him in the shadows. History has been made, and time has revealed its capricious nature.

At a recent reception held in honour of the Minister, Keyamo in Effurun, the headquarters of Uvwie Local Government Area in Delta State, it was a vibrant and colorful affair, attracting prominent Nigerians from all corners of the country.

Rt Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, at the ceremony that had in attendance, traditional rulers from across the state, dignitaries across divides amongst others, described the minister as Delta pride whose dedication to state and nation had seen him reappointed as member of the Federal Executive Council.

Governor Oborevwori represented by the Commissioner for work, rural development Mr Charles Aniagwu, hailed the minister for his appointment noting that it has brought pride to Delta and the Urhobo nation and implored him to continue to give quality service to the nation.

The Ovie of Uvwie Kingdom, HRM, Dr Emmanuel Sideso Abe 1, in his speech expressed joy in the reappointment of Olorogun Festus Keyamo as member of the Federal Executive Council, noting that it came as a big source of inspiration to all sons and daughters of the kingdom and urged the minister to use his position to attract laudable projects to the state as well as the Urhobo nation.

Expressing gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the monarch called for more federal presence as well as rehabilitation of some failed portions of federal roads in the state, revitalisation of the Osubi airport, the Koko, and Sapele seaports to decongest the Lagos sea port as well as federal government intervention in land reclamation by the Nigerian Army and now allegedly being sold to private developers.

While speaking, the minister expressed gratitude to the monarch and people of the kingdom for the show of love and support towards him. He assured Uvwie kingdom, the Urhobo nation and Delta state to always represent them effectively, emphasizing that he would strive to exceed the expectations of Nigerians in revamping the aviation sector.

Top Government officials in the ministry were also not left out. They accompanied the Minister to the Grand reception held at the Palace of the Ovie of Uvwie Kingdom. The reception climaxed with entertainment including cultural displays from different ethnic nationalities domiciled in the kingdom as well as presentation of gifts.

Other dignitaries in attendance were the chairman Delta state board of internal revenue, Chief Solomon Ighrakpata, lawmakers across the country, Uvwie council chairman, Hon Ramsey Onoyake, director generals from various Federal Government Agencies and Parastals and host of others

However, the conspicuous presence of the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu at the occasion was unmistaken, both in its significance and giving effect to the clout of the personality being honoured. It was a bold statement that Keyamo was the man to deal with if you needed anything from President Tinubu as far as APC in Delta State is concerned.

Curiously, the former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, was noticeably absent from the guest list, having reportedly not received invitation from the Minister. A reliable source had confided that the Minister intentionally excluded the former Deputy Senate President from the ceremony, sending a clear message that his leadership of the APC in the state has become a thing of the past.

The Minister has openly asserted his control over the party in the state, firmly establishing himself as the new authority, leaving Omo-Agege in the shadows. Day by day, Omo-Agege, finds himself sinking deeper into irrelevance in Delta State, overshadowed by the Aviation Minister’s soaring presence. The once-authoritative words of the former Deputy Senate President reportedly holds little weight now, as APC members in the state turn their attention towards the Aviation Minister, who confidently assumes the role of the party’s leader.

All eyes are on Keyamo, hoping for effective leadership; free from the dictatorial tendencies displayed by Omo-Agege. And stakeholders of the party are making no pretences about who is the new kid on the block.

With the recent victory of the Delta State Governor, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori at the Appeal Court on November 24th, 2023, Omo-Agege’s relevance in Delta State politics appears to have waned even further. Meanwhile, that of the Aviation Minister stands tall within the APC in the state, casting a long shadow over his political adversaries.

It is evident that Keyamo has overshadowed Omo-Agege, effectively diminishing his influence and stripping him of his former power. The once-powerful figure now finds himself grappling with the harsh reality of a diminished political standing. Indeed, nothing lasts forever.

Party members applaud the Aviation Minister for ushering in an early retirement for the once-prominent figure within Delta State politics. Undoubtedly, this is a challenging period for the former Deputy Senate President, as he navigates the unfamiliar territory of diminished influence. How swiftly time flies, altering the landscape of power and prominence.

While Governor Oborevwori holds sway as father to all Deltans and leader of the PDP in the state, Keyamo betrides the isle as leader of the opposition APC. There are expectations that this development would result in noticeable progress for all.

Already, the Governor has signposted that he is willing to work with Keyamo by ensuring that his government was effectively represented at the reception. That Oborevwori has kickstarted massive construction of flyovers and bridges in Warri and environs from Effurun, should not be lost on the minister. Only time will tell how long this seeming rapprochement between Sheriff and Keyamo would last. Deltans are watching. True, just a matter of time.

Protests at Escravos Terminal: NNPCL, NUPRC disown Chevron

Protests at Escravos Terminal: NNPCL, NUPRC disown Chevron

* How Chevron, Olu of Warri Palace collude to circumvent NUPRC recommendations, PIB laws

Syndicated Report

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) have disowned the American oil giant, Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) over the poor implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act in its areas of operations in the Niger Delta.

NNPCL and NUPRC in response to the ongoing protests by the indigenes of Ugborodo, Deghele and Ugboegungun communities at the Escravos loading terminal, said the American oil giant should be held responsible for the action.

The umpires in the oil industry were reported to have concluded that failure of the management to comply with extant laws enshrined in the PIA was responsible for the seizure of its facilities in Escravos.

It was gathered that the umpires were particularly livid that CNL jettisoned the PIA in desperation to satisfy the Palace of the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III.

Findings showed that NNPCL and NUPRC were irked that Chevron ignored the advice of NUPRC on the amicable resolution of the impasse between it and indigenes of Ugborodo, Deghele and Ugboegungun communities over the naming of the Host Community Development Trust (HCDT) for communities around Escravos terminal.

The umpires were unhappy that the Palace of the Olu of Warri dictated and imposed a unilateral omnibus name for the communities, a development that negates the spirits of PIA.

Specifically, NUPRC was unimpressed that CNL ignored the letter dispatched to its Managing Director, Mr. Ricky Kennedy, on the resolution of the protracted crisis over the implementation of PIA in its host communities.

The Chief Executive of NUPRC, Mr. Gbenga Komolafe, in a letter to CNL boss dated September 6th, 2023, asked Chevron’s management to respect the spirits and letters of PIA in handling the grievances of its communities of Ugborodo, Deghele and Ugboegungun.

Komolafe ordered Chevron to act in consultation with the commission and the three communities on the naming of the HCDT for communities around Escravos terminal.

Besides, Komolafe directed that Chevron in consultation with host communities should expand the proposed membership of HCDT Board of Trustees from five to nine.

“You are hereby required to work peacefully with the host communities in the implementation of the above within 2 weeks from receipt of this letter,” Komolafe warned.

However, Chevron was reported to have contravened Komolafe’s order in desperation to satisfy the parochial whims and caprices of the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III.

In obedience to the Warri monarch, CNL’s management circumvented the PIA, by imposing a name, alien to the law for the HCDT for communities around Escravos terminal.

Instead of the Ikpere Host Community Development Trust (IHCDT) demanded by Ugborodo,Deghele and Ugboegungun communities for the committees around Escravos terminal, CNL colluded with the Palace of the Olu of Warri, to impose Warri Kingdom Onshore Host Communiyy Development Trust (WKOHCT).

“The WKOHCT which Chevron and Olu of Warri Palace concerted and conspired to impose on the people is against the PIA and contravened the position canvassed by NUPRC in the letter duly conveyed to the company. The PIA is clear and it cannot be subjected to any manipulation by any individual, no matter, how highly placed.

“Law is law and it should be respected by Chevron and the Palace of the Olu of Warri. They should know that PIA is a law and it cannot be manipulated. The reason for the ongoing protests is the unholy alliance by Chevron and Palace of the Olu of Warri to circumvent the PIA.

“Until the PIA is duly implemented, the protesters have vowed to remain at the terminal. PIA only recognises oil bearing communities and not a blanket kingdom, which the Olu of Warri and Chevron are planning to foist on us. We are resisting it and we are going to sustain the resistance.

“The umpires – NNPCL and NUPRC believed that CNL is responsible for the ongoing crisis at the Escravos loading terminal by not doing the right thing and its management have been told to obey the law to guarantee peace,” added the source.

In a statement on behalf of the protesters, Alex Eyengho, said his kinsmen would not vacate the scene unless Chevron implemented the PIA to the letters.

Eyengho, who bemoaned the sponsorship of the troops of the Nigerian Navy to intimidate peaceful and armless protesters by the management of CNL, said no amount of threat and intimidation would deter his people from achieving their legitimate goals.

Eyengho added that the protesters would remain in the area until their 41-point demand are met by the authorities in CNL.

The protesters had seized the Escravos loading terminal since Monday, November 20th, expressing anger over alleged disregard of the law by CNL’s management in the implementation of the PIA.

High Chief Dennis Otuaro’s journey is an inspiration for young people everywhere. His story teaches how focus, resilience, hard work, seizing opportunities at the right time, and trust in God are crucial pillars for success and fulfillment, regardless of one’s circumstances.

He was also a member of the Delta State Waterways Security Council and served as Chairman of the sub-committee on security of the council from 2007 to 2015.

These experiences allowed him to bridge the communication gap between communities and oil-producing companies in the region and the government. He was able to bring the youths to understand the projects, the government, and the relevance of these programs for them. High Chief Otuaro has been a vocal advocate for the provision of infrastructure and restoration of the natural environment of the Niger Delta, given the harm caused by oil spillage and other activities of multinational oil companies affecting the region’s ecosystem.

In 2004, during the regime of late President Umar Yar’adua, he was appointed a member of the Presidential Committee on the Environment on the Niger Delta, which helped the government understand the environmental challenges of the Niger Delta region and proposed possible solutions.

According to the Chief of Gbaramatu Kingdom, “We will not stop speaking, we’ll not stop struggling, and we will not stop fighting, until the oil companies and the governments see the need to take appropriate steps to protect our environment so that our natural life, the ecosystem, is restored, because the environment is deteriorating every day”.

Between 2003 and 2004, High Chief Dennis Brutu Otuaro served as a member of the Presidential Council on the Socio-Economic Development of the Coastal States of the Niger Delta. He believes these areas are neglected but critical to the economic development of the region and the country at large.

“Development is from the coast. In other climes, the coastal states are the most developed, but in Nigeria, the wealth is being collected from the coast to the hinterland. Development of the Region is critical. When you develop the Niger Delta, it will reflect on the country,” he stated.

“I was conferred a chieftaincy title in my village at a very young age as the ‘Ibe-Uyadonwei of Gbaramatu Kingdom’ in Warri Southwest. The meaning of the title is ‘patriot of Gbaramatu kingdom’. It is very challenging, but one thing I believe in is service. My desire is always centered on service to my community, service to my state, and service to the government. Over the years, much of the work I have done is in the area of service. It doesn’t have to be all about appointments. I believe the greatest thing that could happen to anybody is having the opportunity to serve society,” he stated.

The Niger Delta Struggle

High Chief Dennis Brutu Otuaro is a vocal advocate for the Niger Delta. The region remains underdeveloped, lacking basic infrastructure and suffering from environmental degradation caused by oil spillage, gas flaring, and other activities, particularly by the oil companies operating in the oil-rich region, which destroy the ecosystem and foster a low quality of life.

“I am a product of the Niger Delta struggle; I started facing those challenges at a very early age. Since the age of 18, I have been in the struggle,” he stated.

“All we are asking for is a fair share. You cannot be producing these resources and stay neglected. The oil accounts for 90 percent of the country’s export. Yet what we see is a kind of coastal case of underdevelopment. Underdevelopment of the Niger Delta is very pronounced. It is something that is notorious. It doesn’t need any investigation. The question is, are we going to remain like that,” he added, “We will not relent in the struggle to make this place a better place.”

Family

High Chief Dennis Brutu Otuaro attributes his successes in his endeavors to his wife, of whom he speaks highly.

“My wife, Mrs. Ebimoboere Otuaro, is someone that I see as a mother; kind, dependable, resourceful, and more. We were relatively young when we met, and at that very young age, when you don’t have parents and you come across a woman that becomes close to you and gives you meaningful advice, nothing can separate you from someone like that. It is by the grace of God that you find a woman like that,” he stated.

With diligence, honesty, and a belief in God as core values, High Chief Dennis Brutu Otuaro looks ahead to the dawn when the Niger Delta region will be accorded its deserved place in the Nigerian project. He hopes to continue adding value to the business space, improving service delivery, process re-engineering, and automation based on the specific needs of different organizations.

Dream

“I have a dream that one day, we will have bridges linking our Creeks in the entire oil-rich Niger Delta Region, railway stations in the region, good roads, industries, good schools, well-equipped hospitals, and all the good things of life that we are supposed to enjoy as an oil-rich Region,” he stated.
