NGO, NEED to Governor Oborevwori: Introduce CNG Buses to Alleviate Transportation Burden in Delta

NGO, NEED to Governor Oborevwori: Introduce CNG Buses to Alleviate Transportation Burden in Delta

By: Celestine Ukah

Due to transportation challenges facing many in Delta, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Niger Delta Entrepreneurship and Economy Network (NEED), has urged the Delta State Governor, RT. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, to introduce Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses as part of a public initiative to alleviate the transportation burden in the State.

NEED, in its open letter to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori sent to this news platform Wednesday October 1, 2025, signed by the National Coordinator Classics Oke Oteri, Tony Udaya, Delta State Coordinator, and Olubode Olumoye, National Publicity Secretary, respectively, said low-income earners, who form the majority in Delta State, mostly work and conduct small businesses in cities while residing in suburban areas. Due to high transportation costs, this group often ends up with little or nothing at the end of each month.

They noted that 30% to 50% of small and medium enterprises’ SMES earnings are spent on transportation alone, a situation they described as truly demoralizing.

Here’s the full statement:

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE GOVERNOR OF DELTA STATE

The Governor,
Delta State Government,
Government House,
Asaba, Delta State.

House of Assembly Complex,

ADVOCATING FOR CNG BUSES TO ENHANCE TRANSPORTATION IN DELTA STATE AS NIGERIA CELEBRATES 65 YEARS OF INDEPENDENCE

Your Excellency,

We hope this letter finds you in excellent health and high spirits. We are writing as concerned citizens and entrepreneurs of our great state, deeply appreciative of your administration’s efforts to improve the quality of life for all residents and grow the state economy. Your commitment to addressing pressing issues has been commendable, and we are confident that our suggestion will align with your vision for a more sustainable, equitable, and prosperous Delta.

As Nigeria joyously marks her 65th Independence Anniversary today, 1st of October 2025, a day declared a public holiday by the Federal Government, we reflect on our nation’s progress and look towards a brighter future. This milestone reminds us of the importance of unity, patriotism, and collective efforts toward national development, encapsulated in this year’s Independence theme:
“Nigeria @ 65: All Hands On Deck”

The Transportation Challenge in Delta State
As you are aware, transportation has remained a critical aspect of our daily living. Unfortunately, the current state of transportation in our state has become a cause for concern, especially in terms of productivity. Low-income earners, who form the majority in the state, mostly work and conduct small businesses in cities while residing in suburban areas. Due to high transportation costs, this group often ends up with little or nothing at the end of each month. Almost 30% to 50% of their earnings are spent on transportation alone – a truly demoralizing situation.

Moreover, business owners face challenges in securing competent employees due to transportation costs. Some settle for less qualified staff living close to their offices, impacting productivity. For instance, school owners might prefer hiring less competent teachers nearby because they can’t afford salaries factoring in transportation costs for more skilled teachers. Undoubtedly, teacher quality affects student outcomes; this issue extends to other sectors requiring skilled jobs.

Proposal for CNG Buses
To alleviate this burden, we humbly propose that the Delta State government explores acquiring Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses as part of a public transportation initiative. CNG buses offer:

– Affordability: CNG is significantly cheaper than traditional fuels, reducing transportation costs.
– Environmental Benefits: CNG is cleaner, producing fewer emissions, aligning with sustainability goals.
– Economic Growth: Investing in CNG buses can create jobs in maintenance, fueling stations, and related industries.

Conclusion
We trust this appeal will receive your kind consideration. Implementing CNG buses can transform transportation in Delta State, enhancing productivity, supporting economic growth, and improving citizens’ welfare. As Nigeria celebrates 65 years of independence, let Delta State embrace initiatives fostering progress.

Dangote Has Exposed NUPENG, PENGASSON As Evil Forces Against Nigeria’s Progress

Dangote Has Exposed NUPENG, PENGASSAN As Evil Forces Against Nigeria’s Progress

By: Zik Gbemre

NUPENG AND PENGASSAN should stop escalating prevailing economic crisis in the country.

For decades Nigerian refineries have been redundant and every time the federal government wants to sell them these two gangster groups always kick against it, arguing that they want redundant Refinery workers to earn sustained free salaries without working or revenue created.

Who does that in this 21st century anywhere else in the world? The economy of the world is driven by private sectors hence there is physical development. Even the armoury companies that produce arms in the Western countries are owned by private investors.

The era of government owning factories and servicing companies are over, over and over. There are many Nigerian billionaires who stockpile their money in banks to yield interests.

Let Nigerians masses rise to defend Dangote refinery rather than allow a few persons who branded selves as PENGASSAN and NUPENG to sabotage Nigeria economy.

The idea of NUPENG and PENGASSAN to force their workers to join unions should be thrown out.

Dangote Refinery has brought the era of fuel scarcity to end and here NUPENG and PENGASSAN want to create artificial fuel scarcity that will further increase hardship on Nigeria.

Smart Ofugara wrote recently ‘NIGERIA EXPORTS CRUDE,DANGOTE IMPORTS CRUDE,NIGERIA IMPORTS FUEL,DANGOTE EXPORTS FUEL. How can one explain this? ‘

Felix Nana wrote to comment on my previous write up on rescality of NUPENG AND PENGASSAN,’Time to scrap all these moribund NNPC and its allies. The docility of the masses of Nigeria is due to ignorance and cowardice. NUPENG and PENGASSAN should have been abolished four or five years ago.
They constitute pressure group working against the progress of large population and benefit themselves’.

The news making round in social media in few days is that NUPENG and PENGASSAN have directed oil workers to cut off supply of crude oil and natural gas to Dangote refinery.

NUPENG and PENGASSAN are against the interest of the common man. Nigerians should protect Dangote refinery for the overall interest of the country.

Nigerians shouldn’t allow few persons who branded selves as NUPENG and PENGASSAN to derail the Nigerian economy by inducing fuel scarcity. They should be told the blunt truth.

Bandits on rampage in Kwara, kill 11 Forest Guards, Vigilantes, community Head

Bandits on rampage in Kwara, kill 11 Forest Guards, Vigilantes, community Head

Eleven Forest Guards and a community Head were shot dead in Okeode Ifelodun local government area of Kwara state by rampaging bandits who took the community by storm on Sunday, September 28, 2025.

The deceased Forest Guards and vigilantes have been positioned to provide security for the community before they met their untimely death.

Consequently, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who expressed deep grief over the tragedy despite his efforts to stamp out banditry in the state, called for increased security deployments to the community and the state in general to rout the criminals involved in attacks in parts of the state.

According to a statement issued by his press secretary, Rafiu Ajakaiye, to journalists on Sunday, the Governor said the state requires more military deployments to roll back the activities of criminals in parts of Kwara South and Kwara North.

He particularly regretted the loss of innocent civilians and the forest guards who mounted a spirited resistance to the assailants in the early morning incident on grounds of patriotism and love for their communities.

“My heartfelt condolences go to the families. No word can adequately capture the depth of my sadness, and nothing can compensate the bereaved families for these incidents, in spite of our efforts and the investments in enlisting and training the forest guards to bolster the conventional forces.

“Our people are understandably concerned about the situation, and I wholeheartedly share in this grief,” the Governor said in the statement on Sunday.

“While we appreciate the efforts and unquantifiable sacrifices of the security forces as well as the successes so far, we definitely need to do a lot more until we are completely out of the woods.

“Finally, I urge our brave residents to remain calm and avoid the temptation to turn on ourselves. I equally commend all the forest guards and the local hunters who, though lost five of their compatriots, equally neutralised several of the attackers. We will forever be grateful to all of them as our heroes

The Army Headquarters, meanwhile, has directed the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 2 Division of the Nigerian Army in Ibadan to relocate immediately to Kwara to further coordinate and enhance the military response to the development.

Similarly, the state police command in a statement by the Spokesperson Ejire Adetoun Adeyemi issued on Sunday, while confirming the development, stated that:’‎The Kwara State Police Command informs the public of an unfortunate incident that occurred in the early hours of today, 28th September, 2025, in Oke-Ode, Ifelodun LGA of the state.

“‎At about 7:00am today, armed men invaded the Ogbayo area of Oke-Ode, shooting sporadically. A combined team of police operatives and members of the National Forest Security Service responded swiftly to the scene, where they discovered 12 lifeless bodies of vigilante members, including the Baale of Ogbayo.

It added ,”‎the victims sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Additionally, four persons who sustained injuries were immediately taken to Hospital for treatment, while the deceased were evacuated.”

It further stated that,”‎the Kwara State Police Command, in collaboration with the military and NFSS, has intensified efforts to track down the perpetrators of these heinous crimes. Manhunt operations are ongoing, and the Command assures residents that those responsible will be brought to justice.

‎The Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, deeply commiserates with the families of the victims, praying for the repose of their souls. He assures the people of Kwara State of the police command’s unwavering commitment to their safety and security.

Delta Online Publishers Forum to hold 2025 Convention, Annual Lecture on Nigeria’s New Tax Law

Delta Online Publishers Forum to hold 2025 Convention, Annual Lecture on Nigeria’s New Tax Law

The Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF) has announced its 2025 Convention and Annual Lecture, set to take place in Asaba, Delta State, from Wednesday, November 26 to Thursday, November 27, 2025. The two-day programme will open with the induction of new members and a capacity-building training session for members and media practitioners, while the second day will feature the Annual Lecture, themed “Nigeria’s New Tax Law: Implications and Opportunities for Businesses and Society.”

According to a statement signed by Abel Johngold and Josephine Idiovwan Omodior, Chairman and Secretary of the 2025 Planning Committee, this year’s theme reflects the impending implementation of Nigeria’s new tax legislation, which comes into effect on January 1, 2026. Nigeria’s tax framework has undergone significant evolution over the decades, from the Petroleum Profits Tax Act of 1959 and the Companies Income Tax Act of 1961 to the introduction of Value Added Tax in 1993. Each reform has sought to broaden the tax base and improve compliance, but the new law represents one of the most comprehensive reforms to date, aimed at simplifying the system, closing revenue leakages, and enhancing transparency in public finance.

The statement emphasized that the Convention and Annual Lecture will provide a platform for stakeholders to examine both the opportunities and challenges posed by the new law. Beyond its potential impact on businesses, the event is expected to spark discussions on how government can strengthen accountability, ensure fairness in taxation, and deploy revenues toward infrastructure and social development. The Forum noted that such dialogue is particularly timely given Nigeria’s urgent need to diversify revenue sources and fortify fiscal stability.

As is customary, the Annual Lecture will feature a keynote speaker with distinguished expertise in fiscal and economic policy, supported by a panel of discussants drawn from government agencies, professional bodies, civil society organizations, and the private sector. Their collective insights will provide practical guidance on implementing the new tax law effectively while balancing the interests of businesses and society.

Beyond the lecture itself, the Committee highlighted that this year’s Convention also underscores its commitment to professional development within the media sector. By integrating member induction, training, and the Annual Lecture, the Forum continues to foster knowledge sharing, informed debate, and capacity building, contributing both to the growth of media practitioners and to national discourse on one of Nigeria’s most significant fiscal policy reforms.

At a press conference held in Otonloye Hall Sapele on monday September 29,2025 the group demanded that the Delta State government and relevant authorities take immediate action to protect the territorial integrity of the Itsekiri people.

Historical Context

The group cited landmark court judgments from 1928, 1956, and 1964, as well as a 2013 ruling by the then Chief Judge of Delta State, Late Hon. Justice Marshall Umukoro, which consistently affirmed the Itsekiri people’s ownership rights over Warri South Local Government Area.

They argued that these judgments are indisputable and cannot be erased by social media propaganda.

Current Provocations

The Voice of Warri Kingdom Women Initiative alleged that the Amakasu of Ogbe-Ijoh and his people have been attempting to create unrest through criminal occupations, attempts, and cultural incursions into areas such as Miller Waterside, Main Market, and McIver Market.

They warned that these actions threaten peace, security, and economic stability in Warri South Local Government.

– Implementation of Court Judgments: The Delta State government and relevant authorities should enforce all court judgments in favor of Warri Kingdom without delay.
– Protection of Territorial Integrity: The government should protect the territorial integrity of the Itsekiri people and prevent further incursions by the Ijaw people.
Also in a related development the group made demands to Chevron over it’s unfair treatment to Itsekiri communities.
– Open Camp Policy for Chevron: The group also called on Chevron to adopt an open camp policy that would lead to economic growth and job opportunities for the local community.

Chevron’s Role in Community Development

They accused the company of being “wicked” to its host community and demanded that the company adopt policies that benefit the local community .

The group’s president, Mrs. Vivian Eric Mene who signed the statement, emphasized the need for the government and Chevron to take immediate action to address the concerns of the Itsekiri people.

FIFA’s Delayed Decision on South Africa’s Rule Breach Sparks Concern

FIFA’s Delayed Decision on South Africa’s Rule Breach Sparks Concern

The month of October will witness the remaining couple matches to round off the First Round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier, in Africa.

Tunisia and Morocco have all but sealed their places with two games to spare. However, there is a lot to play for elsewhere, as teams in the remaining 7 groups lock horns to decide their automatic qualifiers. Also, the battle to make the cut for the four playoff slots hots up.

Group C comprising South Africa, Benin, Nigeria, Rwanda, Lesotho and Zimbabwe is the most intriguing as the countries earnestly await FIFA’s decision on South Africa’s inappropriate use of Teboho Mokoena in their home tie against Lesotho.

Mokoena got a yellow card against Benin on Match Day 1, in November 2023. He received another yellow card in South Africa’s game with Zimbabwe on June 11, 2024. The rules state that if you are given two yellow cards, you get automatically suspended for the next game, which was against Lesotho. However, the 28-year-old did not serve his suspension.

Given the precedent, South Africa must face a 3-point and 3-goal deduction for failing to observe the suspension. The principle _Ignorantia legis neminem excusat_ – that ignorance of the law is no excuse – applies here, meaning South Africa’s lack of awareness or understanding of the rules will not exempt them from the consequences.

Here, Nigeria Premier Football League before every match days, reels off the names of suspended players to avoid embarrassment. How and why South Africa failed to realize that the player was ineligible against Lesotho is best known to them.

In the run up to the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Nigeria, despite already qualified had three points and three goals deducted from their tally for using a suspended player, Abdullahi Shehu in the ultimate match against bottom side Algeria.

It is now six months since South Africa’s gaffe yet FIFA has yet to hand them the necessary punitive measures. What is taking so much time, after all, disciplinary actions have been announced on pending cases involving Equatorial Guinea and Congo over established infractions?

FIFA appears showing favouritism towards South Africa. They approved Johannesburg, Durban, and Bloemfontein – all in South Africa – as home venues for Lesotho and Zimbabwe’s matches. Meanwhile, Lusaka, Zambia, a nearby option, was not approved.

If similar decisions were made for Benin, their matches would have been moved to Uyo hence, this raises questions about fairness and impartiality in FIFA’s decision-making.

As the last month of the qualifier beckons, FIFA must announce its decision immediately. What if whoever is on the receiving end of its ruling decides to approach the Court of Arbitrary for Sports? Time is really of essence.
