2027: Put electoral act in Pidgin English, Giwa urges INEC, NASS

By: Celestine Ukah

Human rights activist and advocate for people’s rights and justice, Dr. Victor Giwa, has urged the electoral umpire Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and the National Assembly to put the electoral act in Pidgin English in order for most Nigerians to glance at and understand.

Dr. Giwa, a human rights lawyer, stated this Thursday, January 8, on AIT Kakaaki morning show while responding to questions bordering on “INEC and the conduct of 2027 elections.”

He stressed that using the Pidgin English methodology in passing the electoral laws as amended would go a long way in penetrating into the grassroots society of Nigeria and also as a way of voter enlightenment.

Dr. Giwa reiterated his stand that the judiciary should be carried along on the electoral act amendments so that judgments coming from the courts will be in consonance with the INEC laws.

He accused political parties of not being interested in carrying out voter education and other associated programs that are supposed to sanitize the Nigerian electoral system.
