**As Nongu hails team’s courage after toppling Nigerian giants
The Chairman of Lobi Stars Football Club, Dr. Philip Nongu, on behalf of the Board, Management, staff, and senior team players, has received the club’s U-19 squad back to Makurdi following their impressive showing at the first phase of the National Youth Championship in Abia State.
Speaking at the brief reception at McCarthy stadium, Makurdi, Dr. Nongu congratulated the players for displaying resilience and discipline against some of the country’s top football clubs, including Enyimba FC, Rangers International, and Rivers United in what he described as the “beginning of greater things to come.”
“Even if the next phase is played in the sky, you will still come out victorious,” Dr. Nongu declared boldly, encouraging the team to remain focused and committed to their development.
To boost morale, he made a significant cash donation on behalf of the Board and announced that the U-19 squad will officially be retained as the Lobi Stars Youth Team, forming the foundation of the club’s long-term talent pipeline.
Also present was Sir James Iorpuu, Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency and Representative of the Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Alia. He expressed admiration for the team’s unexpected dominance and assured them of the state’s support moving forward.
“The magic you performed in Abia State is a sign that Lobi Stars’ future is bright,” he said, promising to personally attend their next matches, including the finals.
Team Captain Daniel Onu and Coach Stephen Waghgbo, who led the delegation, both appreciated the immense support received from the club and state leadership.
The coach commended the players’ discipline and focus, affirming his belief that the trophy will come home to Benue.
The young team’s success has sparked renewed optimism for the future of football in Benue, as the Lobi Stars Youth Program continues to invest in talent, discipline, and development.
The final phase of the competition will take place at a venue and date yet to be announced and will be shared with the public once confirmed.
