Nigeria ready to Regain Boxing Dominance at the Commonwealth Games

Nigeria is on the verge of recovering her dominant role in the Boxing event at the Commonwealth Games with series of transparent trials for the Pugilists both home and abroad.

Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Dr. Hon. Bukola Olopade was ecstatic to see the Nigerian Boxing Federation organize top notch Boxing week and open Commonwealth Games trials at the Brai Ayonote Boxing Gym of the National Stadium, Lagos.

Olopade who is a season administrator, former Honorable Commissioner in Ogun State who organized the National Sports Festival in Abeokuta recently was delighted in the nation’s prospect at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

The DG praised the Nigerian Boxing Federation leadership “for their dedication to an all-round boxing development through the training of the officials, Coaches, and creating an enabling environment for the Boxers to further hone your skills”.

Said He: “ I am thrilled at the grit and techniques of these young boxers, their moves and knowledge of the sports is truly heartwarming to note, I am sincerely excited our nation’s prospects at the Commonwealth Games”.

He continued: “Based on all I have seen, I am I am confident that Boxing stand a better chance to secure podium placements at the Commonwealth Games hence we have decided to increase the number of our Pugilists to the Games”.

As at the conclusion of the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, Nigeria has won a total 271 medals being 82 Gold; 85 Silver and 104 Bronze since her debut in 1950.

Investigations show that the Birmingham 2022 games were her best performance as she won 12 Gold, 9 Siler and 14 Bronze medals.

Nigeria’s performances consistently rank her as one of Africa’s top performers at the Commonwealth Games. She made the 7th position out of 72 participating nations in boxing and of course the best from Africa at Birmingham. It is significant to add that all the 12 Gold medals in Birmingham were won by Nigeria’s women Boxers.

Director of Communications of the NBF, Mathew Okugbe further told the media that the DG assured the NBF of the support of the Sports Commission beyond the week of trials and proper camping programs ahead of the Glasgow Games.

A total of 120 Boxers, home and abroad, are currently participating in the Lagos trials that started last Sunday and is scheduled to end on Friday.
