THE US PRESIDENT AND THE 2026 WORLD CUP, MATTERS ARISING
The 2026 is just around the corner. What football fans all across the globe are envisaging to be a panorama is gradually turning to be something much more of fear, uncertainty and unpredictability.
Football and indeed all sports, generally speaking is seen as a symbol of peace and unity.
It’s so strong a factor that it builds bridges rather than walls.
But with the way things are going, especially the face-off between the US and Iran, there’s every likelihood that the unity which football fosters among nations of the world would be seriously threatened.
The US President has said without mincing words that he doesn’t care whether Iran plays in the World Cup or not.
This should be a serious concern to FIFA. FIFA should think about the general interest of the participating countries rather than what benefits will accrue to it with the US as one of the hosting countries.
If Russia could be banned from all football activities in the world for waging war against Ukraine, the co-hosting rights given to the US should also be withdrawn for the war orchestrated by the US against Iran.
This is not about religion or politics but essentially about FIFA’s policy against external aggression and or invasion.
Should FIFA do this, it would have succeeded in proving to the whole world that it is myopic and delusional for the Americans to think that the US is the world.
But would Infatino have the balls to do this?
