Edema Fuludu: From League Standout to National Champion

Edema Godmin Fuludu was born on 8 May 1970 in Burutu, Nigeria and grew up in communities where football was more than a pastime – it was a way of life. Talented in midfield from a young age, Fuludu’s precise passing and calm leadership caught the eye of local coaches as he rose through youth circuits and then into the senior game.

By the late 1980s, Fuludu was plying his trade with New Nigerian Bank FC, but it was his move to BCC Lions of Gboko that defined his early career. BCC Lions were among the most formidable Nigerian clubs of that era, and in 1990 they won the African Cup Winners’ Cup, prevailing over Club Africain of Tunisia in the two‑legged final to lift the Mandela Cup for Nigeria.

Fuludu played an instrumental role in that campaign – his run and composure from the penalty spot in the 38th minute at the National stadium in Surulere, brought joy to the fans, underscoring his importance to the squad. More goals added by Agum and Igwillo sealed the fate of the Tunisians in the first leg, rendering the 1-1 draw in Tunis a formality.

His exploits on the domestic and continental stage brought him to the attention of national team selectors. Fuludu earned his place with the Nigeria national team, earning several caps between 1991 and 1995.

He was included in the squad that competed at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia, where Nigeria claimed the continental title.

Following success at home, Fuludu secured a move to Europe, joining Altay SK in Turkey, where he featured regularly and contributed goals from midfield in the competitive Turkish SĂĽper Lig.

After retiring from playing, Fuludu remained deeply involved in Nigerian football. He transitioned into coaching and later football administration, eventually serving as head coach of Warri Wolves FC in the Nigeria Professional Football League.

Beyond coaching, he has taken on leadership roles within the Delta State Football Association
