A Former Nigerian Athlete and respected road race expert, Yusuf Alli, has commended the Executive Governor of Bayelsa State for the bold initiative of sponsoring a new 10km Road Race, describing it as a timely intervention that will not only boost sports development but also place the state firmly on Nigeria’s athletics map.
Alli, a seasoned figure in Nigerian athletics with years of experience both on and off the track, noted that the introduction of the Road Race is a clear demonstration of the government’s commitment to youth empowerment and grassroots sports development. According to him, road races have become one of the most effective platforms globally for discovering talents, promoting healthy living, and stimulating economic activities within host communities.
He emphasized that Bayelsa State, known for its passion for sports, has taken a strategic step in aligning with global best practices by investing in a 10km race, which is widely regarded as an entry-level but highly competitive distance that attracts both elite and amateur runners.
“This is not just another sporting event,” Alli remarked. “It is a vision that has the potential to grow into a major annual fixture on Nigeria’s athletics calendar. With proper planning and consistency, this race will attract top runners from across the country and even beyond, while also giving young athletes a platform to showcase their talents.”
The former athlete further highlighted the broader impact of such an initiative, pointing out that beyond competition, road races bring visibility, tourism, and economic benefits to the host state. Local businesses, hospitality services, and transport systems all stand to gain from the influx of participants and spectators.
He also praised the organizational efforts behind the Road Race, noting that the early signs point to a well-structured event capable of meeting national and international standards. According to him, consistency will be key in ensuring that the race grows in stature and credibility over time.
Alli called on corporate organizations and private sector stakeholders to key into the initiative by offering sponsorship and partnerships, stressing that government alone cannot sustain such a promising project. He added that with collective support, the Bayelsa 10km Road Race could evolve into one of the most anticipated road races in West Africa.
Importantly, he noted that initiatives like this help to redirect the energy of young people into positive ventures, reducing social vices while promoting discipline, fitness, and excellence.
In his concluding remarks, Yusuf Alli applauded the Bayelsa State Government for what he described as “a forward-thinking investment in sports,” urging other states to emulate the gesture. He expressed confidence that the Road Race has come to stay and will, in no distant time, become a reference point in Nigeria’s road race ecosystem.
With endorsements from respected figures like Yusuf Alli, the Bayelsa 10km Road Race is already gaining momentum, setting the stage for what promises to be a landmark event in the country’s athletics calendar.
