Nigeria Launches $500 Million Annual Research & Innovation Development Fund

The Federal Government has approved the National Research and Innovation Development Fund (NRIDF), committing up to $500 million annually to research, science, and technology. Announced by Education Minister Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa following a Federal Executive Council meeting, the Fund will bridge gaps in Nigeria’s research ecosystem by coordinating universities, research institutes, industry, and government around national development goals. It will support competitive grants, innovation infrastructure, commercialisation of research, and science and technology talent development.

The NRIDF will be supervised by the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, under a 17-member National Council on Research and Innovation chaired by the Vice President.

This landmark initiative is a direct reflection of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s unwavering vision to position Nigeria as a continental leader in knowledge, innovation, and sustainable economic transformation.
