HRAC, DELCOF, VREI, Condemn Electoral Violence, Economic Sabotage In Effurun-Warri
The Human Rights Advocacy Coalition (HRAC), in conjunction with Delta State Civil Society Organisational Forum (DELCOF) and Value Rebirth and Empowerment Initiative (VREI), has severely condemned what it described as primitive and aggressive tribalism over the violent clash between the supporters of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and All Progressives Congress (APC), in Warri and Effurun, on Friday 18, September 2026.
In a press statement issued and signed by HRAC and made available to journalists in Warri, the NGOs said, “The violent political clash is an existential assault on human dignity and a fundamental betrayal of the social contract.
“This coalition refuses to treat this as a mere political incident; it is a crime against humanity, a severe infraction of constitutional law, and a psychological assault on our collective peace,” the statement added.
The NGOs said, “To reduce the Effurun–Warri economic artery to a theater of partisan thuggery signposts an act of total ethical and legal bankruptcy,” adding that Section 33 and Section 41 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) explicitly guarantee citizens the unalterable rights to life and freedom of movement.”
They further stated, “By paralyzing this vital corridor, these political actors did not just disrupt traffic; they illegally held an entire population hostage.
“As a vanguard for justice, we refuse to stay silent while the vulnerable—the market women, the daily-wage labourers, the honest business owners are forced to absorb the weaponized anxiety and physical terror unleashed by political mercenaries. We find this systemic moral negligence entirely unacceptable.”
The coalition added, “Let us analyze this with cold, philosophical logic: democracy exists to elevate humanity through an intellectual battle of ideas, not to brutalize it with clubs and machetes. If a political party must rely on terror to assert its dominance, it has already confessed its intellectual vacancy. What we saw in Effurun-Warri yesterday (Friday) is a calculated psychological manipulation—an attempt to breed a culture of fear and learned helplessness, forcing citizens to submit to intimidation.”
Continuing, HRAC asserted, “We are drawing an aggressive line in the sand and unequivocally condemn electoral violence in all its manifestations. The ballot box is an instrument of human self-determination, not a justification for seasonal bloodletting.
No individual’s political ambition, no party’s thirst for power, is logically, legally, or morally superior to the life of a single citizen. To believe otherwise is a pathology of greed that we must aggressively purge from our polity.”
HRAC demanded immediate, uncompromising legal accountability, calling upon security agencies to reject complicity, step out of their inertia, and strictly enforce the Criminal Code Act against the perpetrators of yesterday’s political violence.
“Those who orchestrated and participated in Friday’s madness and previous actions in this regard must be prosecuted swiftly and publicly,” HRAC stated, acknowledging Delta State Government’s directive to law enforcement personnel to investigate the incident, but further emphasised the immediate arrests of the perpetrators, not bureaucratic rhetoric, saying that justice delayed is justice denied. “We will not tolerate political interference in the enforcement of fundamental human rights law,” HRAC affirmed.
Stating further, HRAC said, “To the political leaders who quietly fund and incite this chaos: psychology teaches us that your silence is an explicit endorsement of violence. You are the moral architects of this bloodshed. We demand that you step forward today, publicly disown these thugs, and fiercely warn your followers against hate speech and electoral sabotage. If you cannot lead with moral, legal, and psychological maturity, you have no right to seek the mandate of the people.
“We appeal to the bleeding hearts and enduring humanity of the residents of Effurun, Warri, and the Uvwie community to awaken to the logical reality of your situation: do not allow yourselves to be weaponized by elites who shield their own children in air-conditioned mansions while sending yours to die in the streets.
“We call on traditional, religious, and community leaders to join us in an aggressive, legally backed defense of our shared spaces. Delta State belongs to all of us. Effurun and Warri are spaces for humans to flourish, not to be casualties for political gladiators.
“The Human Rights Advocacy Coalition, DELCOF, and VREI will continue to fiercely advocate for a society rooted in value re-orientation, legal integrity, and human empathy.
“We will not look away, we will not relent, and we won’t tolerate this political savagery any longer. Choose peace, or prepare to face the full wrath of the law and the unyielding resistance of the people.”
