Local Government Autonomy: Governors are pocketing LGCs funds – Sen. Achonu

A former senator who represented Okigwe Zone in Imo State, Sen. Athen Achonu, has accused governors in Nigeria of allegedly pocketing local government funds in the federation.

The former lawmaker made these claims on Arisetv Prime Time show Thursday, June 18. He further revealed that despite some LGAs receiving as much as 400 million allocation monthly, they do not get it in their various states due to governors’ interference, which makes the council chairmen ineffective.

Senator Achonu stated further that the failure of local government administration due to withdrawals of funds due to them fuels insecurity in Nigeria, hence the increased banditry, kidnapping, and other criminal activities worsening in the country, calling for a probe of the governors.

He proffered solutions to various states, urging the Federal Government to ensure governors release the FAAC allocation due to various LGCs to the LGCs for effective security and safety in order to check the insecurity menace affecting the nation.
