Rivers Whales Triumph In First National Teqball League
Rivers Whales Teqball team emerged victorious in the maiden edition of the National Teqball League held at the indoor hall of Abia Sports Club on Saturday, March 28th.
Team Rivers clinched two gold medals and one bronze out of the five categories of events competed for.
Gladys Abasi of Rivers State defeated Rejoice Jatau of Delta State 2-1 to win the team’s first gold medal in the Women’s Singles event.
Later on, Gladys will pair with Musa Joshua to give Team Rivers its second gold medal in the Mix Doubles event. The duo recorded a convincing 2-0 victory over Cornelius Ezeigbo and Ashara Loris of Imo State.
Rivers’ Joshua and Efosa Ebosa had earlier secured a bronze medal for the state after beating Ikoko Andrew and Martins Agu 2-0 in the Men’s Doubles third place match.
Speaking after the victorious outing, the Chairman of Rivers State Teqball Association (RIVTEQ), Mr. Halim Adebola Zaccah attributed the team’s success to the collective efforts of every member of the association.
Halim Zaccah also acknowledged the financial support of RIVTEQ’s Patron, Ambassador Paul Ngwaba and Vice Chairman, Mr. Sunday Ehimen Agbonighale which has helped in boosting the morale of the athletes.
Mr. Halim thanked the governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara for providing the team with the enabling environment to train.
He however, called for more support from the Rivers State government, to further strenghten the State’s reputation as one of the heavyweights in the game of Teqball in Nigeria.
Team Abia won gold in Men’s Singles and Men’s Doubles events while Team Delta clinched the remaing gold medal in the Women’s Doubles event.
Secretary of the body, Viura Lezigha notes that the event attracted teams from 18 States across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, as well as Ghana.
The States were Abia, Anambra, Enugu, Imo, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Ondo, Oyo, Kaduna, Jigawa, Kwara, Gombe, Nasarawa, Kogi, Niger, Plateau and Ghana.
