Here is a brief statistics of Africa’s Premier soccer fiesta, second oldest world regional competition

 

The good old African cup of Nations is here, for the first time the tournament will hold during the yuletide season.

In South America they call it the Copa Americas, in Europe it is call the European Championship, in Asia the Asian Cup while in North America it is called the Gold cup.

It is second oldest regional cum confederation competition after the Copa Americas.
Here is a brief statistics of Africa’s premier soccer fiesta.

It started on the 10th of February 1957 in Sudan, same day CAF was founded with Egypt beating host, Sudan 2:1 in the opener

Raasfat Ateya of Egypt scored the tournament’s first ever goal in the 27th minute

Egypt won the inaugural title beating Ethiopia 4:0 in the 3 team showpiece final showdown (South Africa withdrew for presenting two multiracial teams), it was played on 13th February 1957

Egypt’s Muhammad Al Attar was the first top scorer in 1957 with 5 goals (scoring all 4 goals in the final)
Cameroon’s Samuel Eto’o is the all-time top scorer with 18 goals
🌍DR Congo’s Mulumba Mutumbila Ndiaye is the top scorer in a single tournament with 9 goals in 1974 in Egypt
🌍 Egypt’s Mahmoud EL Gohary and Nigeria’s Stephen Keshi are the only ones to win the title as player, Captain and coach.
🌍 Nigeria’s Muda Lawal is the only player to score in 2 final games in 1980 in Nigeria and 1984 in Ivory Coast
🌍 Egypt is the only country to have won the tournament successively 3 times in 2006, 2008 and 2010
🌍The past winners includes
⭐Egypt : 8 time winners
⭐Cameroon : 5 time winners
⭐Ghana : 4 time winners
⭐Nigeria and Ivory Coast : 3 time winners
⭐DR Congo and Algeria: 2 time winners
⭐1 time winners : Sudan, Ethiopia, Congo Brazilvillle, South Africa, Zambia, Senegal, Tunisia, Morocco.
⭐ Only the Eastern region of Africa are yet to win the title.

So who wins the 35th edition of the continent’s flagship soccer duel, only time will tell, for now, the battle line is drawn and the die is cast, Sunday in Morocco, the ⚽ will get rolling, Africans let’s rumble.
