Urhobos in Canada Commends Oborevwori’s Development Strides across Delta

Members of the Urhobo Progressive (UP) in Ottawa, Canada, have commended Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, for his developmental strides across the state, describing them as a source of pride for Urhobos at home and in the diaspora.

The commendation was a major highlight of a cultural celebration held at the Overbrook Community Centre in Ottawa, where Urhobo sons and daughters, alongside friends from other ethnic nationalities, gathered to promote their heritage and unity.

Speakers at the event noted that the governor’s infrastructural and socio-economic initiatives have continued to enhance the image of Delta State globally, reinforcing confidence among indigenes living abroad.

Delivering a keynote address, Chief Frank Otubue, while chronicling the history of the Urhobo and Isoko people, emphasized the need for sustained cultural preservation. He, however, aligned with other speakers in acknowledging the impact of governance in strengthening cultural identity and community pride.

The President of the Urhobo Progress Union in Canada, Evelyn Akpojiyovwi, urged members to continue promoting the interests of the group, noting that development back home contributes to a stronger sense of belonging among diaspora communities.

In his opening remarks, Chairman of Urhobo Progressive Ottawa, Prince Raphael Orugbo, called for greater unity among Urhobos in Canada and encouraged members to expand outreach to others in the diaspora.

The event featured vibrant cultural displays, including traditional dances, music, comedy, and an array of local delicacies, reflecting the richness of Urhobo heritage.

Guests expressed satisfaction with the celebration, noting that beyond cultural promotion, it also served as a platform to recognize and appreciate leadership efforts in Delta State.
